A power surge rippled through the entire city of Madison shortly after noon Wednesday, leaving parts of the campus in the dark and some students trapped in elevators.
Marc Lovicott, Univeristy of Wisconsin Police Department spokesperson, said the cause of the surge, which resulted in a loss of power across campus, is still unknown.
“The dispatch center went down for a few minutes after the surge, but was restored once back up power kicked in,” Lovicott said.
This surge caused computer, security and elevator systems to go down, Lovicott said. UWPD responded to between 10 and 12 different elevator calls across campus shortly after the power surge, he said.
Lovicott said UWPD has been up and running since shortly after the power surge and is responding to student safety needs on campus due to the outages.
We will continue to update this post as new details are available.
