Associated Students of Madison voted to combine the University Affairs Committee with the Shared Governance Committee and to change the name of the Finance Committee.

On a 22-0 vote, ASM chose to remove the UAC so it can merge with the Shared Governance Committee. For the combination to happen, ASM must vote in favor of it again at its next meeting on April 13.

The decision to get rid of the committee stems from the belief that UAC and the Shared Governance Committee share similar goals and would be more efficient if combined into one committee.

ASM wants more student input in UW decisions

In addition to voting to remove UAC, ASM addressed potential bylaw changes and switched the name of the Finance Committee to the Grant Allocation Committee.

The reasoning behind the change of the committee name is due to confusion students have regarding what the Finance Committee does, Finance Committee Chair Ariela Rivkin explained.

“Finance Committee is in no way representative of student orgs seeking grants,” Rivkin said. “It really doesn’t tell them what we do. Grant Allocation Committee really explains what you need to do to get grants allocated from student council.”

ASM Chair Madison Laning also discussed potentially changing the name of the retention and recruitment coordinator position to the outreach director.

Laning said the name change is needed because the current title implies ASM retention and recruitment rely on one person when everyone involved in the process.

“The outreach director would be … a person who is well versed in all the trainings we have, [and is] able to go to student organizations across campus and give trainings,” Laning said.

ASM will review additional bylaw changes and vote on them at its next meeting.
