Shell reopens after pipe rupture

After flooding in the Camp Randall Sports Center caused it to temporarily close on Sept. 22, the facility reopened at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Director of Recreational Sports John Horn said.

All fitness areas, the track and two of the four basketball courts in the Shell are now open to users, Horn said. Two basketball courts still contain damage from the pipe leak and are currently not open for use, he said.

The track and basketball courts underwent a rolling procedure to level the surfaces but courts three and four still have some problems, Horn said. Rec Sports will need to bring in floor companies and experts to determine if those courts can be reopened.

UW Risk Management felt the other surfaces were level enough and were comfortable reopening the facility to students, Horn said.

The ruptured pipe was part of the fire service line, which remains inoperable, Horn said. The cause of the rupture is still unknown, but it is assumed the incident occurred because of old age, he said.

Horn said he is unsure what UW will recommend in terms of trying to repair the pipe now or in the future.

Rec Sports has an ongoing insurance claim and the cost of repairing the damage is currently unknown, Horn said.

Many of UW’s other recreational facilities are slated for updates in the next few years as part of the Rec Sports Master Plan. However, currently no design plans for the Shell exist in Rec Sport’s recently outlined plan.

Horn said Rec Sports has not yet determined whether it will continue to use the Shell in the future.

The University of Wisconsin’s Athletics Department is still reviewing the space to see what options exist, Horn said. He added Rec Sports will need to put a significant amount of funding into the Shell if the university wants to keep it operational in the coming years.
