Shell remains closed after “outdated” pipe bursts

The Camp Randall Sports Center remained closed Monday after an outdated pipe bursting caused standing water throughout the facility overnight on Sunday.

The exact source and location of the water leak at the Shell is not yet known, Bill Elvey, director of University of Wisconsin Facilities, Planning and Management, said in an email to The Badger Herald. However, although the ruptured pipe was under the facility, it was not a part of the Shell’s infrastructure, Recreational Sports Director John Horn said.

The plumbing is “certainly outdated,” he said. The damage to the facility has not been assessed yet, but revenue is being lost because members and intramural teams cannot use the facility, Horn said.

“It’s a big impact at this point regardless of the damage, and the damage could be substantive,” Horn said. “It wasn’t one specific area, we actually had water all the way over to the ice rink.”

The majority of the facility was affected by standing water over a good portion of the facility throughout the night, Horn said. Although much of the water has been removed from various surfaces, it is possible that water is in between the layers of the track, the fitness equipment and the basketball court, Horn said.

The power to floor electrical boxes have been shut down, Elvey said. Electrical floor boxes and telecom floor boxes were flooded and will most likely need to be replaced, he said.

Elvey added the main water service to the building is currently shut off and that the domestic water service will be restored on Tuesday morning.

If it is not, temporary arrangements for the building’s fire protection water service can be made, Elvey said.

Elvey added UW plumbers are taking this time during shutdown time to repair another leaking pipe located near the building’s water meter.

Many of UW’s other recreational facilities are slated for updates in the next few years as part of the Rec Sports Master Plan, however, there are currently no design plans for the Shell in Rec Sport’s recently outlined plan.

Horn said it has not yet been determined if Rec Sports will continue to use the Shell in the future.

The University of Wisconsin’s Athletics Department is still reviewing the space to see what options exist, Horn said. He added Rec Sports will need to put a significant amount of funding into the Shell if the university wants to keep it operational in the coming years.
