UW System posts job description for next president

University of Wisconsin System posted the official job description for the seventh system president Wednesday, three months after UW System President Kevin Reilly’s resignation announcement.

Highlighting academic advocacy and shared governance, the UW System launched a new website dedicated to the search and screen process in effort to inform potential applicants on the role.

“The President shall be a strong advocate for academic quality, operational excellence, affordability, efficiency and equal opportunity in the UW System and in higher education nationally, and a visionary leader working to ensure that the UW System remains a world-class system of higher education,” the job description read.

The description drew upon comments from UW System school representatives shared at a recent videoconference meeting.

Following a two committee structure, a search and screen committee and a regent selection committee will review the nominations in conjunction with private professional executive search consultant Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates, a firm which was also used in the search for UW-Madison Chancellor Becky Blank, UW System spokesperson David Giroux said.

Giroux said he is unsure how many people will apply for the position, however he expects there will be a lot of interest in the position.

“Despite everything we’ve been through, the UW system is still highly regarded across the country and around the world and we believe that being head of the system is still one of the premier jobs in higher education,” Giroux said.

Nominations and applications will be accepted through September and October and reviewed and vetted by the 18-member search and screen committee throughout November and December, according to the website.

The committee, which was announced in August, will include one student, UW-Green Bay student Heba Mohammad, according to the website.

The search committee will determine a list of 10 to 12 prospective candidates to present to the regent selection committee which will then narrow the applicants down to the five finalists the committee believes are people fully prepared to do the job, Giroux said.

The selection committee will recommend one individual to the full Board, which must approve the appointment, who will replace Reilly in January 2014, the website said.

UW Board of Regent President Michael Falbo and Search and Screen Committee Chair Regent Regina Millner did not respond for comment.
