Police arrested Derrick Smith Saturday in the early morning after he allegedly knocked a woman unconscious.

According to a Madison Police Department incident report, witnesses said they heard screaming coming from the intersection of North Webster Street and East Mifflin Street and called the police. Some of the witnesses saw Smith hit the victim, a 24-year-old woman, in the face.

Police responded and apprehended Smith, and the victim was transported to the hospital.

It was unclear what sparked the violence as the victim and suspect had differing accounts of the incident.

According to MPD spokesperson Joel DeSpain, the two were in an on-and-off relationship.

DeSpain said the victim suffered no major injuries.
