With additional deputies out patrolling Madison’s roads on Valentine’s Day as part of an alcohol enforcement plan, five operating while intoxicated arrests were made in a single eight-hour shift Friday evening.

Overtime officers working Valentine’s Day evening made three arrests, and four additional arrests were made by regularly scheduled officers, a statement said.

Dane County Sheriff spokesperson Elise Schaffer said the alcohol enforcement plan stems from grants the sheriff’s office received from the Department of Transportation.

“The shift total was pretty high,” she said. “In one night and one shift, this was a lot of arrests.”

Schaffer said the $60,000 grant, which was awarded last fall, allows the department to specifically assign deputies to work more than their regular hours to ensure the roads are safe from intoxicated drivers.

Although this weekend was randomly chosen to send out extra deputies to patrol the roads, she said the office typically sends out extra officers for holidays and special events.
