Downtown area sees residential burglary, hate-motivated battery

Robbery: Langdon Street

Police arrested a Madison woman in connection with an unusual robbery after finding turkey breast slices and dried fruit, as well as several other items from a Langdon Street residence, in her possession Saturday afternoon.

Police report they arrested Ifrah A. Mohamed, 23, after she allegedly robbed a home in the 600 block of Langdon street around 2 p.m. The report said Mohamed was able to enter the building because an outside security door was not properly latched shut.

The report said numerous residents reported items missing from the building, and police stopped Mohamed as she was leaving the residence.

Police report finding Mohamed in possession of a wallet, a package of turkey breast slices, some dried fruit, a bottle of wine, and a bottle of perfume. Police added some clothing may have been stolen.

The police report said this was an unusual robbery, as these types of items are not typically stolen in on-campus robberies.

Battery: North Henry Street

Police arrested a Janesville man downtown after he punched two men for speaking Hebrew early Saturday morning.

Dylan T. Grall was arrested for battery with two counts of hate crime enhancer, a Madison Police Department report said.

The report said Grall swore at the men and told them to speak English. He then struck both victims, the report said, and one fell to the ground. The report said Grall denied hitting the two victims, though a witness told police they saw Grall attack the two men.

MPD Sgt. Matt Schroedl said the suspect will be charged with hate crime enhancement as he attacked the men for speaking Hebrew.

“When somebody is targeted for a protected class, whether it’s race, religion, sexual preference or a host of other protected classes of people, that would then include the enhancer,” Schroedl said. “The victims were speaking Hebrew, so that’s what that would be based on.”

Schroedl said the next steps for the suspect will be determined during court proceedings.
