Three male students were robbed at gunpoint in their apartment on Vilas Avenue Sunday night.
Two African-American males in their late teens to early 20s entered the students’ apartment around 11 p.m., a Madison Police Department statement said. One of the suspects brandished a black semi-automatic handgun, according to the statement.
MPD spokesperson Joel DeSpain said the suspects allegedly ordered the victims to the ground and proceeded to take a variety of electronics. He said the victims were unharmed.
DeSpain said the robbery was a “unique” case and of the utmost concern to the police.
“Most of our home invasions are drugged-related,” he said. “There’s no information to suggest [this robbery] was drug related. It’s a very unusual robbery, and it’s still being investigated.”
It is possible the suspects entered the apartment through a window after removing a fan, DeSpain said.
DeSpain said students should try to keep their doors and windows locked and as secure as possible, even when at home. He also advised students to write down the serial numbers of their electronics.
“We tell people to do this, so that if things are stolen, at least we have a record of the number so if we get things back we know who they belong to,” DeSpain said.
