Koval and Central District Captain Carl Gloede were the two finalists among a pool of 20 applicants. Koval was chosen after a vote at a Police and Fire Commission meeting, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
Koval has worked at the Madison Police Department since 1983 and has overseen training and recruitment efforts, according to the State Journal. He will take over for former Chief Noble Wray who retired in September. Randy Gaber has been serving as the interim chief.
