Assembly Republicans voted unanimously Tuesday to replace Rep. Bill Kramer, R-Waukesha, as majority leader following allegations of sexual harassment.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, said Assembly Republicans were convinced of the accusations against Kramer, calling them “reprehensible” and “embarrassing” at a news conference Tuesday.

“We are moving on from a bad situation, but certainly our agenda is not going to be slowed, nor is our continuing effort to make Wisconsin grow and prosper,” Vos said.

The caucus selected retiring Rep. Patricia Strachota, R-West Bend, as the new Assembly majority leader for the duration of the legislative session.

Legislators were instructed to use the criteria of someone who who is engaged and willing to help maintain the Republican majority outside the Capitol to choose a new majority leader, Vos said.

“When I woke up this morning, I didn’t know this is where I was going to be this afternoon, but I will step up to the challenge as the majority leader, ” Strachota said.

Vos said although the vote does not remove Kramer from the Legislature, he hopes Kramer will choose not to run for reelection.

Kramer could remain in treatment for the next few months, according to Vos, and he is not expected to participate in the remainder of the current Assembly floor period, which is expected to end Thursday.
