Campuses across the University of Wisconsin System may soon be able to conduct secret projects for the federal government with the passage of a bill to allow classified research Thursday in the Assembly.
The bill had been previously amended in committee to remove a measure that would have exempted all UW System research from the state’s open records law.
UW System policy, which currently restricts research that cannot be published in the state, would be opened up to allow for such research, specifically in the interest of national security.

The Assembly approved the amended version of the bill on a voice vote today. The bill will now go to the Senate for a vote before going to Gov. Scott Walker’s desk to be signed into law.
