Wisconsin is the latest state to approve a bill Tuesday to form a constitutional convention, which would take up an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to force Congress to balance the federal budget.
The state’s Assembly Committee on Campaigns and Elections committee approved the bill in a 6-2 vote, which will next be presented to the full Assembly for consideration.
According to data from the Balanced Budget Amendment Task Force, 20 states have approved resolutions requesting a constitutional convention to consider a balanced budget amendment.
Article V of the United States Constitution requires at least two-thirds of state legislatures to vote to petition the U.S. Legislature for a constitutional convention, and an amendment must be approved by three-fourths of states to become law.
