HAYES ROAD

Kidnapping

A 26-year-old Madison man was arrested Tuesday after violently kidnapping his ex-girlfriend and holding her hostage at gunpoint until Madison Police Department officials were able to locate the suspect.

Police officials received a concerned phone call from a 30-year-old Madison woman’s family saying the woman disappeared with no information as to her whereabouts, according to an MPD report,

Although some police precincts require a person to be missing for 48 hours before the individual can be considered missing, MPD spokesperson Joel DeSpain said this situation warranted concern for the victim to be missing and endangered.

Police were able to use cell phone technology to locate the general area of the victim’s cell phone and later found the woman’s vehicle located in a Red Roof Inn parking lot.

Officers established a perimeter and arrested Joshua Humbach at gunpoint. Police found the woman bound and gagged in a hotel room with a loaded gun sitting nearby. The woman said the suspect was in her apartment when she arrived home about seven hours before police found her.

EAST SIDE

False police report

MPD officers responded to a falsely-reported domestic abuse phone call that was supposed to be part of an April Fools’ Day prank a sister was playing on her sibling, an MPD report said.

A Madison woman texted her sister April 1 saying her husband had hit her and she was going to hit him back because there was potentially a gun involved, according to the report.

The text recipient believed the sister’s prank and reported the incident to police. When the sister explained it was a joke, MPD responded with caution.

“The woman was given a lecture and was not charged,” DeSpain said. “We’re always going to make sure people are safe once we get that call because it is not uncommon for someone in a domestic situation to call and try to call off police.”

W. BELTLINE HIGHWAY

Battery

A 15-year-old Madison boy suffered a concussion and a broken nose after being jumped by a number of teenage boys after exiting a Madison Metro bus late April 1.

According to an MPD report, several cars quickly stopped near the victim and several teenagers jumped out and began to punch, kick and hit the victim with a board.

The victim said he believes the suspects might have mistaken him for someone else who got off the bus at the same time.

As of Wednesday afternoon, police had not recovered any video footage from the Metro bus, but DeSpain said it was department policy to do so if the footage would help identify the suspects or provide more information.

ALHAMBRA PLACE

Battery

An 18-year-old homosexual man was jumped and called derogatory names Sunday while riding a Madison Metro bus.

Although MPD officers arrested 17-year-old Jay’von Flemming, of Madison, April 5 with tentative charges of battery with a hate crime enhancer, DeSpain said officers are still trying to locate the other two suspects involved in the incident.

According to the report, Flemming had previously bullied the victim because of his sexual orientation.

The victim suffered blows to the nose and ear during the attack, the report said.

MCKEE ROAD

Stolen vehicle

Madison Police officials released photos of a suspect who allegedly stole a vehicle and ran through a grocery store ordering civilians to get down to the ground April 4.

“Madison Police Department and the Verona Police Department are actively seeking [Alex Cook, 19,]” DeSpain said in an email. “Anyone with information on his whereabouts, or anyone seeing Mr. Cook, should call 911 immediately. He should be considered dangerous and possibly armed.”

According to an MPD report, Cook ran through Copps while being pursued by law enforcement.
