A University of Wisconsin employee in her 60s was killed Thursday when she was hit by a truck in reverse at Mendota court, police confirmed.
A UW student was driving the truck, which is owned by the UW System, in reverse when he hit the woman. The accident occurred on Mendota Court at North Lake Street at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning. The victim was taken to the hospital immediately following the incident, where she died.
Jordan McEvoy, a UW student who works on Langdon Street and witnessed the aftermath of the incident, said the driver knocked on the door to her place of work and asked for help.
“Someone started pounding and shouting at the door,” McEvoy said. “He was shouting, ‘I hit someone, I hit someone.'”
She said the student was clearly shaken and upset.
She and the student immediately called the police and went outside to wait for the ambulance, McEvoy said.
According to a Madison Police Department report, a police traffic specialist is currently investigating the case. Police have yet to release the name of the victim.
UW Provost Paul DeLuca expressed his condolences in a statement Thursday.
“We’re saddened by this tragic loss of a member of our community,” DeLuca said. “As we wait to learn more about what happened, we want our campus community to know that there are resources to support them in a difficult time.”
