Edgewood College students were asked to remain in their dorm rooms for a brief period, as the campus was locked down late Sunday night, according to campus Security Officer James Soley.

An incident in the area, but not on campus, led to the decision to keep students in their rooms due to security concerns, Soley said. He added security officials are cooperating with Madison Police Department in their investigation of the incident.

Madison police are currently investigating a possible armed robbery on Monroe Street, near the Edgewood campus, according to Lt. Joey Skenandore, the MPD officer in charge. He would not say whether the possible robbery was the reason for the lock down.

The lock down has been lifted as of 12:20 p.m., Soley confirmed.

According to an MPD report, a 20 to 30 year old white male entered an ice cream shop on Monroe Street with a semi-automatic handgun and demanded money from the clerk. The clerk then simply told him “this is an ice cream store”, the suspect swore, and then left the store.

MPD spokesperson Joel DeSpain said police searched for the suspect with a K-9 unit near the northern portion of the Edgewood campus Sunday evening but were not able to find the suspect.
