The Babcock Dairy Plant is home to the favorite, mouth-watering products University of Wisconsin students crave. Located on campus since 1951, students are provided fresh cheese curds, milk and, of course, ice cream on a daily basis.
Each year, Babcock produces around 80,000 gallons of ice cream, more than 45,000 pounds of cheese as well as 800,000 bottles of milk, Bill Klein, Dairy Plant manager, said in an email to The Badger Herald.
“We rely on students along with our full time workers in order to produce safe and high quality products,” Klein said. “We are here to provide a place for students to gain experience in the dairy processing operation.”
Inside the plant, the employees work tirelessly at early hours to produce each product.
“It’s a lot of fun to work here,” Ben Havlicek, a Babcock employee and junior in forest and wildlife ecology, said. “We do a lot of hard work to make a good product that we can sell on campus for students to enjoy.”
“There’s the freshman 15 and then there’s the Babcock 15,” Babcock employee Aubrea Bluhm, a senior in food science, joked.
Many people don’t know Babcock is located on campus, Rachel Gerbitz, a freshman in dairy science and life science communication, said.
