Madison police continue to investigate a strong armed robbery which occurred early Friday morning on the 300 block of West Mifflin Street.

A stranger approached a 21-year-old woman on the street and demanded her valuables at 1:30 a.m., according to the Madison Police report. The suspect kept a hand in his pocket, indicating that he may be armed and then fled with her laptop and wallet, the report said.

Because the suspect did not actually display a weapon, the crime is considered a “strong armed robbery,” Madison Police Department spokesperson Joel DeSpain said.

“A strong armed robbery could be anything from snatching something out of someone’s hand to punching someone and knocking them down, as long as there is no weapon,” DeSpain said.

The report said the suspect is believed to be a white male, six feet tall and 200 pounds with brown ear-length hair, brown eyes, facial stubble and a deep voice. He was last seen wearing a blue baseball cap, baggy medium-wash jeans, sneakers and an oversized gray sweatshirt, the report said.

So far, the suspect has not been found and the investigation is ongoing, DeSpain said.

“In this particular case, it would be my belief that the suspect would be arrested for strong armed robbery,” DeSpain said.

DeSpain said people who are being robbed should give up their valuables, whether the perpetrator is armed or not.

“You don’t want to put yourself in the position where you’re going to be injured,” DeSpain said.

He added that victims should find the nearest telephone and report the crime immediately. The more quickly police can get into an area following a crime, the better chance there is that they can catch the suspect, DeSpain said.
