Crime in Brief

CAMP RANDALL

Ejections and Arrests

While the crowd was generally well-behaved, the Badger game against Nebraska Saturday still had its fair share of ejections and arrests, University of Wisconsin Police Department Sgt. Aaron Chapin said.

Ejections totaled 77 people on Saturday, Chapin said, and 43 of the ejections were students. Thirty-six people were arrested.

The highly-anticipated game drew more people into town, and UWPD had more officers on staff during the game. While the numbers for arrests and ejections were higher than they have been in past games, Chapin said the crowd was overall easy to work with.

CITY OF MADISON

Heroin Overdoses

The Madison Police Department responded to three incidents of heroin abuse last week, according to a report from the police department.

Schmedeman Avenue

The first incident occurred Monday morning, when a Middleton woman was hospitalized after she was found in a parked car on Schmedeman Avenue. According to an incident report, the expectant mother said she had used heroin.

South Mills St.

A second incident occurred Wednesday when officers responded to a call around 7 a.m. after a 21-year-old man was found inside a home on the 300 block of South Mills St., according to an MPD report.

According to the report, the man was not breathing and was immediately hospitalized and placed on a ventilator. He admitted to snorting heroin, said the report.

Walgreens – Raymond Road

In a separate incident, police were called to a bathroom in a Walgreens on Raymond Road after an unconscious 20-year-old man was found on the floor. According to the police report, he was surrounded by drug paraphernalia and a syringe was in the toilet.

He was hospitalized, at which time, the report said, he confessed to injecting heroin in the bathroom.

Alder Matt Phair, District 20, said that heroin overdoses are a growing problem citywide, not limited to any specific area. He suggested that any Madison residents who are struggling with drug problems seek help from county resources, such as Tellurian drug treatment facilities.

MAYFAIR AVENUE

Residential Burglary

Two men allegedly entered a Mayfair Avenue residence of a 36-year-old woman through a back window and stole items including jewelry and a camera from the home, according to an MPD report.

A neighbor saw the men and called the MPD, who quickly arrived and pursued the suspect based on directions from other neighbors, the report said.

Officers apprehended two suspects, one of whom is a Dane County Jail inmate who has been absent without leave since missing a court-ordered appointment Sept. 21, according to the report.
