One man is in custody after threatening a couple with a knife on State Street late Sunday afternoon.

According to a Madison Police Department incident report, a white man yelled racial slurs and vulgarities at a black couple after they all got off a bus downtown. The man then pulled a knife on the couple and told them he could kill them.

The man was also yelling at others both on and off the bus, witnesses told police.

Robert D. Hamm II, a homeless man, was arrested for disorderly conduct while armed and carrying a concealed knife, according to the incident report. The report said the man smelled of intoxicants.

The arresting officer is asking the court to ban Hamm II from State Street. This is not the first time he has been involved in an incident in the area, the incident report said.
