Police arrested Jimmy Basusa early Sunday morning for driving while intoxicated after he crashed into a concrete barrier in the construction area of Frances Street, between Johnson Street and University Avenue, according to a Madison police report.
The report said Basusa, 34 years old, struck the barrier with his right front tire at about 2:50 a.m. His car then rode up onto the barrier slightly, causing his car to tip over on his driver’s side and trapping Basusa in the car until help arrived, the report said.
The report said no other property was damaged and no one else was injured.
Police spokesperson Joel DeSpain said it is not uncommon for the police to see a spike in intoxicated drivers on the weekends.
“Certainly there are a number of people who are intoxicated and driving on the weekend, and typically on the weekends we do see more issues with intoxicated motors,” DeSpain said.
Basusa was charged with both the first offense of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and for deviating from the traffic lane, police report.
DeSpain said as it is his first offense, Basusa will receive a municipal citation. He can either pay the fine or “fight it out” in a municipal court, DeSpain said.
