On the eve of the first day of classes, a University of Wisconsin student fought off a man who she suspected was attempting to sexually assault her.
According to a Madison Police Department incident report, the victim, a 22-year-old downtown resident, was walking home early Tuesday morning when around 2 a.m., a man began following her.

The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. as she approached her home in the 200 block of North Pinckney Street, the man grabbed her, pulled her down and got on top of her. She fought him off and was able to get inside of her locked building safely, MPD spokesperson Joel DeSpain said.
The suspect is a black male, 5-foot-10 to 6-foot-1, 180 to 210 pounds and was last seen wearing a red t-shirt.
DeSpain said MPD is currently investigating the incident.
