Rohrman’s recruits; good things to come

Jeff Rohrman’s second season as head coach showed glimpses of where the team will eventually be. Although the season was not without rough spots, soccer fans can be very optimistic about the near future of the men’s soccer program.

This year’s team was middle-of-the-road. UW was unable to put together a winning streak of more than two matches; however, on the bright side, its longest losing streak was two matches, and that only happened once. The team usually followed a win-lose-win-lose pattern.

Another paradox showed up during in-state matches. UW lost to UWGB early in the season. UW was expected to win; it was simply embarrassing not to. But just as the season would have it, UW went into an insane environment right in the middle of the UW-Milwaukee campus and beat the Panthers 1-0. UWM definitely did not expect to lose that cold October day, but it did and UW could not have been happier.

The Badgers had a number of injuries this year, but they still battled through. All three captains missed games throughout the season. Seniors Watson V. Prather and Erol Goknur, and junior goalkeeper Eric Hanson were sidelined by injuries at one point or another, some longer than others. The beauty of it all was that UW had players that could step up and fill those shoes.

Jeff Rohrman’s recruiting deserves a lot of credit for that. When Hanson was out, freshman Jake Settle posted a shutout in his first college start. In the backfield, freshmen Aaron Hohlbein, Andrew Cardona and Amid Afsari did a great job compensating for Prather’s injury. Rohrman’s freshmen midfielders Aaron Witchger, Reid Johnson and John Scripp did great as well.

After Jed Hohlbein’s red card against Indiana, freshman Matthew Jelacic had the game-winning goal in his first start at forward the following match. Rohrman’s recruits got the job done. The players who were here before Rohrman did fantastic as well. Veterans Nick Van Sicklen, Hanson and Noah Goerlitz were main staples in UW’s game this year. Soccer enthusiasts have many more exciting matches to look forward to as Rohrman continues to rebuild UW’s program.
