State law could soon protect minors who call 911 or seek medical services for themselves or their friends while intoxicated.
The Senate Committee on Universities and Technical Colleges will hold a public hearing Wednesday on a responsible action bill that would provide legal protections for underage drinking.
The bill, introduced in June by Sen. Fred Risser, D-Madison, would exempt intoxicated minors from citations and conviction of underage violations if the individual contacts law enforcement or medical assistance.
In addition, the University of Wisconsin System would not be able to take certain disciplinary actions against students who commit underage violations like removing such students from courses, placing restrictions on course enrollment, suspending or expelling students or excluding them from student housing.
Students can attend this public forum Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Capitol building room 400 Southeast.
