Man jumps on police car to ‘impress friends’

A 23-year-old Madison resident caused $1,000 in damage to a police car on State Street early Saturday morning, saying he was “just trying to impress [his] friends.”

A Madison Police Department officer found suspect Zachary Zweifel jumping up and down on the hood of a police vehicle on the 500 block of State Street around 2 a.m. Saturday, a report from MPD said.

Police were alerted to the incident after hearing reports of loud noises that sounded like something was striking a vehicle, according to the statement.

“We don’t usually see people jump on top of squad cars, that would definitely be uncommon,” MPD spokesperson Joel DeSpain said.

After being discovered, the suspect took off on foot, but took a wrong turn into a dead end area near Frances Street, the statement said. After a short pursuit, Zwiefel was cornered and taken into custody by police and was arrested for criminal damage to property and restricting/obstructing police.

Zwiefel was “apologetic” when he was arrested and told officers he was trying to impress his friends.

DeSpain said the incident was “highly uncommon,” especially with the increased number of police officers stationed in the area.

Since it was a weekend night, DeSpain said officers were in close proximity to the scene and were able to aid in the man’s arrest. There has been a recent increase in the number of police officers in the downtown area to manage the large number of bar patrons, DeSpain said.

“There tend to be a lot of people who are spewing out particularly from the bar area into that section of State Street so we do have more officers over there particularly on the weekend nights,” said DeSpain.

The incident report did not mention whether the suspect’s friends were impressed by the spectacle.
