A University of Wisconsin junior was arrested in Madison Monday and accused of murdering his mother, who drowned in a lake in Northern Wisconsin in June.
Chase Boruch, 24, was brought in on charges of first-degree intentional homicide at his apartment on the 300 block of West Washington Avenue, according to a report from the Madison Police Department.
He was arrested in connection with the death of his mother, Sally Pergolski, a 63-year-old Wausau woman. Pergolski died when her car went into Moraine Lake in the small Lincoln County town of Harrison on June 6.
The Rhinelander Daily News reported in June that Boruch had told police he was in the car with his mother but he managed to escape. The newspaper also reported that Boruch had told cops he had been able to get Pergolski out of the car but could not resuscitate her.
Officials in Lincoln County, who were not available for comment as of press time, called the incident suspicious shortly after Pergolski’s death, and brought in the state Department of Criminal Investigation to help look into a possible homicide case.
Boruch began attending UW-Madison this fall. He transferred to Madison with credits from North-Central Technical College and UW-Marathon County, both located in Wausau. He served as president of the University of Wisconsin Colleges Student Governance Council as recently as 2009.
As President of the SGC, Boruch’s responsibilities included negotiating student and administrative policy with officials from the UW Colleges and students from other UW Colleges. He was a veteran of the Iraq War, serving there as early as 2005, and is believed to have had an interest in psychology.
