Students organize to clean campus

Business student organizations across campus gathered Sunday to pick up litter in their community.

Professional business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi holds their Campus Cleanup every semester, partnering with the University of Wisconsin School of Business to organize student volunteers, AKPsi Chapter Liason Jennifer Wojnarowicz said.

The program was started by the AKPsi’s outreach committee as a way for members to give back to their community about 10 years ago, AKPsi President Cameron Carey said. Since then, it has paired with the business school and its associated student organizations.

“AKPsi came up with the idea because we find outreach so closely tied to our commitment to community service and professional development,” Carey said in an email to The Badger Herald, noting this event as one example of more than 30 the organization does for community service each semester.

Wojnarowicz said the event usually sees about 250 student volunteers, from organizations such as Wisconsin School of Business Compass Program, Badger Business Buddies, Beta Alpha Psi, Multicultural Business Student Association and the Institute of Management Accountants.

The students work to clean up litter covering more than 25 miles of campus and Wojnarowicz said AKPsi saw 240 participants Sunday.

In order to organize the event, AKPsi must contact organizations across campus and the Madison community. This semester, University Housing is allowing the group to compost trash at their facilities as well as the building coordinator of Grainger Hall.

“The goal of our cleanup is to continuously have students of the Wisconsin School of Business actively giving back to the community,” Wojnarowicz said in an email to The Badger Herald. “As the event continues to expand, we will definitely carry it on into the future. This is one of our most successful outreach events in the community.”
