A dispute occurred on State Street Friday night after a suspect pulled out a kitchen knife.

A 21-year-old woman said the suspect had been leaving empty bottles of cough syrup near where she and others slept, according to a Madison Police Department incident report.

The suspect, 22-year-old Mark Figueroa, was told to stop and leave or he might jeopardize others’ ability to stay in the area.

Witnesses said the interaction escalated when the suspect punched a 21-year-old man and cut the woman’s hand.

Another man said he threw a skateboard at the suspect when the suspect began to advance on him.

The woman tried to call police, but the suspect broke the cell phone she was using. She ran into a nearby business to call for help.

Officers located Figueroa and arrested him for substantial battery, disorderly conduct while armed and damage to property.
