[Update 9/22]: Steep and Brew, the popular State Street coffee shop will close Monday, Sept. 28.

A sign posted outside of the shop Tuesday, Sept. 22 reads:

“Dear State Street,

After more than 30 years as a cafe for the wonderers, the dreamers and the bright, we will be closing our doors at 8 p.m. on Monday, September 28th. Thank you for all of the good times, the bad days made better with a strong cup of coffee & some kind words. Thank you for the friendships, the good conversations & the smiles. Thank you.

Until next time, The Dirt Trolls of Steep & Brew.”

Though shop owner Mark Ballering confirmed closure, he would not disclose how long ago the building was purchased or by whom.

The location has been a staple study spot, hangout and iced coffee favorite for three decades.

This follows closures of several other stores on the 400 and 500 blocks of State Street this year including Forever Yogurt, Mango Boutique, Sports World LLC and Smokes on State.

It is unclear whether this is in connection to any sort of push to absolve State Street of its “food court” feel.

State Street dynamic may shift from food-focused to foot traffic friendly

Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4, whose district includes State Street, had not yet heard of Steep and Brew’s plans to close its doors when contacted by The Badger Herald.

When asked about his experience on State Street, Ballering said there were both good and bad times.

“There have been pluses and minuses to any longer term business relationship,” Ballering said.

Ballering said he has no current plans to move to another location.
