The Senate Health Committee voted Wednesday to approve Gov. Scott Walker’s reappointment of his political committee’s treasurer to the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics board.
Walker is reappointing Andrew Hitt, the treasurer for his political action committee Our American Revival. The vote was on partisan lines, with Republicans in support and Democrats against.
Some Democratic lawmakers disagreed with the decision. Sen. Jon Erpenbach, D-Middleton, said to the Associated Press he found the decision “odd.”
“It’s a situation where you take a look at what he’s known for, and what he’s known for is being treasurer for a group that’s pushing Scott Walker to be president,” Erpenbach said. “What does this board have to do with the governor’s presidential campaign? That’s how I’m looking at it.”
Walker gets to make six appointments to the board, David Walsh, chair of the UW Hospital and Clinics Authority Board said.
Hitt had served on the board previously for about a year-and-a-half, Walsh said. Hitt was a representative of the state Department of Administration. Walsh said he was not worried about Hitt’s reappointment, because they were all on the same page.
“Andrew served on this board before and he served well,” Walsh said. “I believe he will do so again.”
Julie Laundrie, spokesperson for Erpenbach, said the board was a fiduciary board. They approve the money and help set policies for UW Hospital, she said.
Walsh said he didn’t care about Hitt’s political affiliation. Walsh, who identified himself as having a “long democratic background,” said he only cares about people working hard.
“We don’t have partisan issues, we care about healthcare in the big W,” Walsh said.
The nomination will be voted by the full Senate.
