Regents, students will share board experience

This week’s Board of Regents meeting on the University of Wisconsin campus will offer a unique experience for the regents, as they will be paired with various student leaders.

Associated Students of Madison Vice Chair Tom Templeton said students were selected to match with the regents for breakfast, a tour of the Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research and for dinner.

“It will be a showcase; the students will meet with them to talk about our Wisconsin experience,” Templeton said.

According to Templeton, quite a few people from different organizations will be a part of the matching, such as College Democrats and Wisconsin Student Public Interest Research Group.?

ASM Chair Tyler Junger said the student leaders did not have to have anything prepared, but he said he is sending a welcome e-mail to the regent with whom he was paired.?

“It really gives the regents a chance to talk to people who go to school here, but it will also be a great experience for the students as well, to be able to talk to the regents and ask them questions,” Junger said.

Members of the board appreciate the one-on-one time with students, faculty and staff, said David Giroux, UW System spokesperson.

“It helps them better understand, and get a more unique flavor of the campus. Although we typically meet here [in Madison] and have an office here in Van Hise, we don’t always get the chance to focus on the campus itself,” Giroux said. “This will be a nice opportunity to do that.”

During the Board of Regents meeting, Templeton and Junger will also be giving a presentation on the progress of the Madison Initiative proposals.

Templeton said the goal is to give an update to the regents of where the oversight committee stands, what has been funded, how it has been working out so far and to answer any questions the board may have.

?”We’ll talk about the initial progress as well as the timeline we’ve been working on,” Junger said. “I feel it will be very informative and beneficial for them to hear the updates on the initiative.”
