The death of yet another music legend, Prince, 57, rocked the world Thursday.
This week’s playlist is meant to pay respect to a man who helped erase the boundaries of race and gender through unique and thoughtful artistry. It’s amazing he always managed to keep our heads spinning. Is he black or white? Is he a man or a woman? Is he gay or straight? He used his music as his answer: “It doesn’t matter.”
This week’s tracks celebrate the legacy Prince leaves behind through his many collaborations and forays into songwriting for other artists. For instance, Prince penned Sinead O’Connor and Chaka Khan’s biggest songs, a little know secret for many years.
The third track, “Sugar Walls” by Sheena Easton, also highlights his ability to play with gender and sexuality in songwriting. The song is, let’s just say, not about the walls on each side of a room.
Curiously, the majority of Prince’s catalog has been pulled from Spotify. Yet one song that remains is the funky, “Stare,” from his most recent album, 2015’s Hit n Run Phase Two. It’s a testament to his talent, as he brings the funk in this song just as strongly as he did in his heyday.
Next comes Prince’s 1989 collaboration with Madonna, “Love Song,” which pairs her sexual, feminine voice, with an androgynous and funky sound only Prince can bring. The remainder of the playlist is full of Prince’s finest collaborations and songwriting. It includes everything from Sheila E.’s signature 1984 hit “The Glamorous Life” to “Toy Soldiers” by one of Prince’s many protégées, Martika — also a huge worldwide hit.
The playlist also features two songs by Prince-associated band, The Time, who played in Prince’s landmark 1984 film Purple Rain. Ending the playlist is Prince’s heart-wrenching cover of Joni Mitchell’s ballad “A Case of You.” Try to keep a dry eye.
This is only a taste of the essence of Prince. Since his classics are not on Spotify, one must search the internet for the tracks that we all know and love, or will love.
But this is a good start to see that Prince is not only a stunning artist in terms of the tracks he made, but also in terms of the careers he helped build and the musical scene he had a hand in inspiring.
