Selected by a jury from a multitude of submissions, the artwork displayed at the University of Wisconsin 88th Annual Student Art Show offers glimpses into the creative visions of the selected students.

At Gallery 1308 in Union South, this year’s exhibit includes a diverse selection of art pieces including paintings, ink drawings, photography and ceramics.

No two pieces look alike, but each creative work is original and abstract in nature.

One piece that particularly stood out was an oil and acrylic painting by Tara Austin entitled “Imogen,” which won the Porter Butts Art Purchase Prize. The work incorporated both earthy and warm tones in an intricate, abstract design that stood massively on the wall of the gallery.

Another deserving recognition is a photograph entitled “Black Honey” by Sarah Rose Smiley, which depicts the somber face of a subject covered in dripping honey. The portrait portrays an abstract, yet refined depiction of the human form that is equally as thought-provoking as it is aesthetically pleasing.

For her effort, Smiley also received the Class of 1930 Trust Fund Purchase Prize and the Sally Owen Marshall Best in Show Award.

Robin Shmoldt, Union South Program Director, said in her juror statement for the event that the art pieces exhibited highlight the artistic talent UW has to offer.

“Each of the pieces included in this exhibition exemplifies the depth and breadth of artistic talent within the UW-Madison student body,” Shmoldt said.
