After a whirlwind of new music in 2015, the most memorable tracks emerged from newcomers and old favorites alike.
The Badger Herald’s 2015 hit list exemplifies quality, genuine artistry. Plucked from the endless stream of fresh music, these songs avoided the overplayed pop radio.
There were newcomers like Courtney Barnett and SOAK shine with their well-crafted alternative songs. Established divas Lana Del Rey and Florence Welch returned with some stunning music of their own.
Track 10 is from UK artist Fleur East, whose album isn’t available in the U.S. yet — but check out her song, “Sax.” It’s 150 percent energy from start to finish and follows where her cover of “Uptown Funk” left off. Another standout is SOAK’s gorgeous and heart-wrenching song, “Sea Creatures.” Listen and try not to tear up.
Finally, my number one goes to Grimes’ refreshing anthem, “California,” from her stellar album, Art Angels. It’s the musical equivalent to driving around the desert in a cherry red convertible. Its joy is personified, although the lyrics reveal a sadder story.
