‘Tis
the season of new television pilots, where the networks gamble on intriguing
storylines and characters they hope will seize the attention of viewers.
Although this year’s fall TV schedule relies heavily on returning programs, the
networks have found slots to squeeze their new hopefuls into. And while there
are programs that will likely not make it past the first week, there are
definitely some in the lineup that are hopefully here to stay.
New must-sees…
Hawaii Five-0 (CBS)
Those in our
generation may have heard their parents reminiscing about this drama from the
good old days, but audiences of every age should prepare for a new crime show
that is anything but old-fashioned. “Hawaii Five-0” promises plenty of action,
tropical views, and awesome special effects. Critics are raving about the
pilot, but are worried producers won’t be able to make that big
blockbuster-feel last.
My Generation (ABC)
In the past few years
viewers have come to expect some impressive television from ABC dramas. The
network aims to uphold that reputation with their newest, “My Generation.” Shot
in a “mockumentary” style, the show introduces a stereotypical group of high
school classmates, and then follows them ten years after graduation. The cast
quickly discovers that hopes for the future don’t always pan out as planned. If
the program can successfully reach across more than one “generation,” it will
likely find a permanent home on the ABC schedule, and in yours.

Law & Order:
Los Angeles (NBC)
This fall, for the
first time in more than two decades, NBC will be without its longest-running
drama, and one that spurred five spin-offs, the original “Law & Order.”
Although “Law & Order: SVU” will be returning, there is question as to
whether the franchise can continue, especially when its foundation no longer
exists. Dick Wolf’s newest effort has a seemingly strong cast, but it will be
interesting to see if the new addition to the franchise is a struggling last
effort, or whether it’ll breathe new life into a concept that is now more than
twenty years old.
And don’t forget about
established favorites like…
The Office (NBC)
Viewers will be
brought back to Scranton for the seventh season of “The Office.” Fans are
hoping the show will get back on track after season six was dubbed one of the
show’s weakest efforts. Season seven is sure to bring changes to America’s
favorite “Office,” as star Steve Carell is reprising his role as awkward boss
Michael Scott for the final time.
Modern Family (ABC)
ABC’s breakout comedy
of last year, “Modern Family,” has viewers eagerly awaiting its return. Its
eccentric and amusing characters are sure to bring lots of laughs in their
second season. The Emmy-nominated show has plenty in store this year, including
an earthquake, and guest star Nathan Lane. For those who haven’t taken a chance
on “Modern Family” yet, place it at the top of your to-do list.
So amidst the studying
and other activities in your fall schedule, devote some of that precious time
to these new shows.
