The UW community will soon get to watch toe tapping, hard rocking, expertly danced, incredibly fun musical numbers. And no, it’s not an episode of “Glee.” This Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., The Wisconsin Singers bring a jam-packed, energy-driven show to the Memorial Union Theater entitled “Don’t Stop the Music.” And this show lives up to its name.
With more than 40 shows in one year, this is the Wisconsin Singers’ only performance on campus, and they have catered to students’ wishes. While not forgetting their Broadway roots with medleys from “West Side Story” and other musicals, the first act is almost exclusively rock ‘n’ roll. Elvis, Kansas, Aerosmith and Jet are sung in up to eight-part harmonies and accompanied by choreography.
UW sophomore Matt Huston, a second-year member of the group, considers himself more of a singer, but has adapted to the challenging dances.
“I’ve been singing since I was in sixth grade,” Huston said. “Most people in the group started at an early age.”
Director and manager Robin Whitty-Novotny explained, “The group has always hired outside choreographers and tried to be reflective of how music has changed over the years in our dancing. L.A. dancers are brought in, but Broadway choreographers create the bulk of the dancing. One man who choreographed for us recently did the same for ‘Bye Bye Birdie,’ which just opened on Broadway.”
Different from all shows in the past, “Don’t Stop the Music” offers the first ever hip-hop medley including songs from Beyonc? and the Oscar-winning “Jai Ho” from “Slumdog Millionaire.”
“The group takes pride at tackling many styles. Not just the singer/dancers are versatile. The band is as well,” Whitty-Novotny said.
Ten instrumentalists playing keyboards, drums, guitar, bass, sax and a horn section promise to rock the house all night. They also dance and sing.
“Every person is important to The (Wisconsin) Singers: the singer/dancers, the band, the technical crew, the student board and administrative staff. Everyone plays a role,” Whitty-Novotny said.
Around for more than 40 years, The Wisconsin Singers play an important role in this community. They are a full-fledged entertainment company, playing in more than 35 towns throughout the year. Recently, the group became affiliated with the university as Goodwill Ambassadors, taking on a much larger responsibility of representing the school and its ideals.
The group holds auditions in the spring for the following year, and incoming freshmen are invited to the audition. Huston remembers auditioning when he was still a senior in high school.
“I sang two contrasting songs, one up-tempo and one down. We vocalized to test our range and had a dance audition. The callback was similar where I sang and danced again.”
It is a very extensive process for all who audition, but the group settles with 16 incredibly talented singer/dancers and a full company ready to perform. Two weeks before the semester begins, the entire ensemble goes through an intense two-week boot camp with the choreographers and learn the entire show. Since then, The Singers have been rehearsing every week and are ready to show their peers and the Madison community a fantastic performance, always ending with the “Wisconsin Medley” to show school pride.
Overall, the group, as professional as it is, works together as one unit because they are all close friends.
Huston recalled, “We rehearse every Sunday, we travel together every weekend second semester; we act professionally but we joke around and hang out a lot too.”
Although some of The Wisconsin Singers are music majors, most are not, like Huston who is planning to major in either psychology or business. What unites the group, though, is its love for music and its love to perform. And this shows in every show.
The director promises 90 minutes of nonstop action, more than 70 songs from different genres, humor and great live entertainment.
“There are not many opportunities to see live shows, and this is one of them,” Whitty-Novotny said. “Most of all, people should come to see their collegiate peers enjoying the heck out of what they are doing.”
The Wisconsin Singers will be joined by Fundamentally Sound, Madison East Show Choir, LaFollette Show Choir and the winners of UW’s Got Talent, Hypnotiq. Tickets are on sale now at the Memorial Union Theater box office and cost $10. All seats are reserved.
