Put down the bottle, brah, you won’t need alcohol to have a good time this weekend. For all those complaining about the lack of alcohol-free entertainment on campus, assorted academic departments and campus arts organizations have combined their efforts for Arts Night Out this Saturday, Sept. 28.
The program features a bevy of events around town designed to let students have a good time and at the same time broaden their cultural horizons.
Herald Arts offers a rundown of Saturday night’s events, complete with our picks of those you can’t miss.
Domestica and Discourse, 7-9 p.m.: A gallery reception on the seventh floor of the Humanities building, featuring exhibitions by Glenn Williams and Chris Walla.
Keys, Mallets & Vibes, 8 p.m.: Free concert from students in the School of Music at Mills Concert Hall.
Model Material, 5-8 p.m.: The Gallery of Design (1300 Linden St.) will feature architectural models by Madison’s Bruce Severson.
Dancing, 5-7 p.m.: Those of you love the funky chicken, read on; those who do the “shopping cart” on a regular basis, take note.
Lovers of dance can get some more formal training in the movement arts at Lathrop Hall on University Avenue. The program offers lessons in swing, Latin and African dance taught by seasoned UW dance professors.
Participants should work up a healthy appetite that can be easily sated by delectable refreshments in the Victorian Virginia F. Harrison parlor. With two large studios to accommodate droves of dancers, the more uncoordinated, two-left-footed people who show up the better.
Origami Demo and WUD Reception, 7-8:30: Demonstration in the art of paper folding in the Main Lounge of Memorial Union.
Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Co., 8 p.m.: Dance is a labor of love. Bill T. Jones and the late Arnie Zane felt that love for dance and for each other. Together they formed a dance company that travels the globe performing their “visionary fusion of dance and music.”
In 2002, the company has graced stages from Los Angeles to their home in New York City; they have gone as far south as Brazil and as far north as the University of Maine.
The company is comprised of more than 10 professional dancers who have some of the most diverse dancing backgrounds found in professional dance today. They will perform at the Memorial Union Theater as the marquee event of Arts Night Out. Students can catch the show for only $15, while it will cost the general public $32.
Elvehjem Museum Reception, 7-8:30 p.m.: Enjoy refreshments, art, and the musical styling of DJ Puzzle at the Elvehjem.
The Passion of Dracula, 7:30 p.m.: Catch the closing weekend of the University Theatre’s production of this comic thriller.
Cinematheque, 7:30 p.m.: The Cinematheque continues its “Gags and Gals” series with Frank Tashlin’s underappreciated gem, “Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?”
In this spoof of the TV advertising industry, Rockwell Hunter (Tony Randall) is the low man on the totem pole at the advertising company where he works until he finds the perfect spokesmodel for Stay-Put lipstick, Rita Marlowe (Jayne Mansfield). Rock has to act publicly as Rita’s “loverboy,” and Rock’s fiancée Jenny isn’t too happy about it . . . and the comedic hijinks ensue.
Skip the multiplex and see a classic Hollywood flick for free.
Night Light, after 9:30 p.m.: This assault on the senses will feature art, performance, installation, tech, light, video projection, DJs and will be located near the Humanities Building.
