UW President Reilly wants 5.5 percent increase for tuition

UW System President Kevin Reilly has recommended maintaining a 5.5 percent tuition increase at four-year campuses and a freeze at the UW Colleges for the third year in a row, a week before the UW Board of Regents set final tuition rates for the 2009-10 year.

In a press release sent out Friday, Reilly acknowledged the financial struggles caused by new state budget cuts, but emphasized the need to maintain value and affordability at all UW System schools.

“We are committed to keeping tuition increases modest and predictable,” Riley said in a statement. “For the benefit of all, it is vital that college remains within the reasonable reach of Wisconsin residents.”

Reilly’s recommendation would hike UW-Madison tuition by $618, with $250 of that increase coming from the Madison Initiative for Undergraduates.?
