University of Wisconsin Police and the Madison Fire Department rushed to help a choking man early Wednesday afternoon.

The man, a university employee, began to choke on a piece of meat while eating inside Grainger Hall. People around him immediately dialed 911.

"We responded to a call of a man choking, but by the time we arrived, it appeared the man had removed the obstruction," UWPD Lt. Joe Hornbeck said. "He was a little concerned, but he seemed to be all right."

Hornbeck said the man was not taken to the hospital after paramedics checked his condition.

Eric Dahl, a Madison Fire Department public information officer, said the city's fire department received the call around 12:22 p.m. Shortly after, they sent both an ambulance and a fire truck for precautionary reasons.

"We send [both vehicles] because it allows us to get to the scene faster," he said. "A lot of our firefighters are trained as EMTs, and many of them are paramedics that can immediately offer aid if needed."
