Committee to hold informational sessions on HR redesign efforts

The University of Wisconsin committee charged with redesigning the university’s human resources personnel system will have its quarterly information sessions to update the campus community on their efforts over the next two weeks.

Robert Lavigna, director of Human Resources, said the new strategic plan was designed to make the human resources unit the best it could be by hiring the most talented staff available for UW.

Updates on the HR Design Project take place every three months, generally with two sessions in the daytime and two at night, for people who want to be involved but work a third shift, Lavigna said. The project tries to involve as many people as possible by holding extended time periods and translations into Spanish, Chinese, Hmong and Tibetan, he said.

Lavigna said facilitators at the sessions have assembled more than 11 work teams involving labor units and students to develop recommendations they believe would benefit the project.

Kevin Walters, student representative on the HR Design Project, said it was hard to give an exact update on the HR Design project but the goal of the HR department is to continue to achieve a great campus environment.

“Overall we want UW to be where people want to work,” Walters said. “That is what this whole project is about. Hiring and having the best people to work.”

The plan wants to bring in the best fit of talent for the university, Lavigna said. He said he was “very excited” about the project and that it was “critically important” for the university as a whole to retain its great reputation.

The project aims to guarantee that all employees are treated with flexibility, fairness and equitability, Lavigna said.

“The goal we hope to achieve is to have our HR system be the best it can be for our world class university,” Lavigna said.

The HR Design Project also has an impact on student employees because it ensures all staff and employees of the university are treated well, paid well and that the right people are hired, Walters said.

The project has gained statutory approval and seeks to be voted on in July 2015, Lavigna said, adding that the campus community had been heavily involved in the process.

“There has been an extraordinary amount of campus involvement. Everyone seems to be interested and I believe that makes this a high priority,” Lavigna said.
