UW freshman Andrew Joudrey scored his second goal of the season in Wisconsin’s 3-1 loss to St. Cloud State Saturday.
The action began early in the first period with Wisconsin penalties. UW killed the first of St. Cloud’s power play opportunities but could not hold off the Huskies in the 5:00 game misconduct against sophomore Ryan MacMurchy. St. Cloud’s Peter Szabo squeezed the puck past the left side of UW junior goalie Bernd Bruckler and made the first of his two power-play goals of the evening with an assist from Brock Hooton and Matt Gens. Wisconsin finished the first period with aggressive offense but could not slip a puck past the Huskies’ goaltender, Adam Coole.
The second period began with two more penalties, this time against SCSU, and Wisconsin enjoyed 15 seconds of 5-on-3. In the second power play, sophomore Nick Licari came scooting toward the goal as the puck slid around Coole, but Licari could not stop himself in time to get his stick in front of him, and the puck entered the net after hitting Licari’s skate.
The Huskies’ second goal came at 5:16 in the third when Ryan LaMere backhanded it past Bruckler. Hooton counted his second assist and Joe Jensen had his first assist of the game with that play. Soon after, Wisconsin junior Pete Talafous headed to the box with a tripping penalty and St. Cloud took advantage. Szabo scored his second power-play goal and SCSU’s third with Hooten assisting for the third time, using the back-door play to slide the puck past Bruckler.
Just past the halfway point of the third period, Joudrey put the Wisconsin offense on the board. Assisting his power-play goal were rookies Ryan Suter and Jeff Likens.
SCSU’s Coole ended the game with 28 saves, while Bruckler tallied 23. Both teams racked up 10 penalties for 62 total penalty minutes.
The loss came one day after UW lost its WCHA opener to the Huskies by a 2-1 margin. St. Cloud State topped UW Friday after the Huskies’ T.J. McElroy backhanded a goal past Bruckler with less than two minutes left to play.
Wisconsin (1-3-0, 0-2-0 WCHA) returns to action Friday, Oct. 24 in its home opener against Quinnipiac. Face-off at the Kohl Center is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
