On November 1, The Badger Herald printed a photo on our front page of a partygoer dressed in a stereotypical Native American costume as part of our coverage of Freakfest 2010. Since then, we’ve received several e-mails and calls from students and faculty asking us to address this decision.
We regret any pain this has caused the Native American community, and we consider this a teachable moment for both the UW community and ourselves. Students should think twice about dressing in a costume that some may find offensive, and we as a newspaper should avoid promulgating negative stereotypes, even if they may seem innocent on the surface.
