(AP) – Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has requested federal disaster assistance for 10 southern Wisconsin counties as a result of a blizzard that hit the area in February.
In a letter to President Barack Obama and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Walker requests federal aid to offset the cost of cleanup efforts in Dane, Dodge, Grant, Iowa, Kenosha, Lafayette, Milwaukee, Racine, Walworth and Washington. Walker says blizzard response cost $9.5 million across the 10 counties.
If declared disaster areas, the federal government would reimburse state and local agencies for 75 percent of the cost. The remainder of the cost would be split equally between local and state government.
The blizzard, which hit between Jan. 31 and Feb. 3, dumped 12 to 26 inches of snow in the affected area.
