A Madison babysitter was sentenced to 30 years in prison Friday for sexually assaulting the 8-year-old-boy he had been watching for more than a year.
Dane County Circuit Court Judge William Hanrahan, who presided over the case, said the offender, Donald Lloyd Crompton, abused the trust of the victim’s family.
“The prognosis for the family of the child recovering is not good,” Hanrahan said. “Needless to say they cannot trust anybody now because this was a trusted individual and a person they believed in.”
He said the assaults took place between March 2012 and May 2013 in the home of the victim’s parents.
Crompton, 24, has had three separate hearings each involving different victims of abuse before this most recent incident, Hanrahan said. According to Hanrahan, one of the victims was three years old, and the other two were very young as well.
“The only way we can judge future behavior is by evaluating past behavior,” Hanrahan said. “His molestation of children has continued for years and there is an enormous threat to the children of Dane County presented by this individual.”
Hanrahan said he based his decision on the seriousness of the offense, the character of the offender and the public’s need for protection. He said the Dane County Department of Corrections also made recommendations urging a prison sentence for Crompton.
According to Hanrahan, even the psychological expert brought in by Robert Hurley, Crompton’s defense attorney, recommended a minimum sentence of seven or eight years in prison.
“Even in the study most favorable to the defendant, there is a recognition that this young man would put people at very great risk,” Hanrahan said.
Hanrahan said while in prison, Crompton will be placed in sexual assault treatment programs where he will meet with psychologists and psychiatrists.
During the hearing, Crompton plead guilty to one incident of sexual assault against the boy but said he has never had sexual feelings for children. Hanrahan said Crompton appears to be in extreme denial about the severity of the situation.
