An intoxicated University of Wisconsin student was hit by a vehicle on the 500 block of University Avenue as she was texting while crossing the street Friday.

The victim, 20, was crossing the street at 1:07 a.m. when she fell behind her group of friends, a Madison Police Department statement said. Her friends reported hearing a “thump,” turned around and saw her lying in the road, the statement said.

The driver of the vehicle did not stop after the victim was struck, the statement said.  The vehicle was described as gold, sliver and black, the statement said.

MPD Sgt. Lori Chalecki said police do not have any more information on the description of the vehicle.

Chalecki said police are still investigating the incident, including whether the victim or the vehicle driver violated traffic laws. She said whether the victim or the driver were at fault will not be revealed until the investigation is complete.

The victim was taken to the hospital to treat non-life threatening injuries, abrasions and a possible concussion, the statement said.

Marc Lovicott, University of Wisconsin Madison Police Department spokesperson, said the incident should not be blamed on the student. However, he said drinking and being unaware of one’s surroundings can create a dangerous situation.

“First and foremost, we never want to blame a victim, but that being said this is a really good example why, first of all, being intoxicated to that state is dangerous,” Lovicott said. “Second of all, removing yourself from your surroundings and being on your cellphone is dangerous.”

Lovicott said texting without regard to one’s own safety and surroundings always creates the potential for a dangerous collision.

Lovicott added UWPD is happy the victim survived, but everyone, including students, should take this as a reminder to be more cautious when walking about.

“This is obviously an incident where this goes to the extreme,” Lovicott said. “But it’s something people need to consider.”
