A 21-year-old was mugged downtown on his walk home after a night out in downtown Madison early Saturday morning.

The victim was walking home around bar time when several men approached him, one of whom was armed with a gun, according to a Madison Police Department statement. After struggling with the suspects, the victim was knocked unconscious and lost his glasses in the fight, the statement said.

The victim said he was unable to determine the exact location of the robbery because he could not read the street signs without his glasses but said it could have taken place on West Wilson Street or Williamson Street, Madison Police Department spokesperson Joel DeSpain said.

The robbers had left by the time the victim awoke to notice his glasses, cell phone and pocket knife were missing, DeSpain said.

According to the statement, one of the suspects was a 23 to 24-year-old black male with a “beer belly” and a mustache who was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt.

DeSpain said reports did not indicate whether the suspects or the victim were intoxicated, however added that the victim had been “out” for the night.

“He had been out playing pool at a bar [but] was not overly intoxicated,” DeSpain said.

DeSpain said police offered to give the victim medical help, but the victim said he would go to the hospital later if he felt he needed it. Police are unable to determine this crime’s connection to any others due to the lack of information on the suspects, DeSpain said.

“Really hard to say, it could be, but we just don’t have enough information on the perpetrators,” DeSpain said. “We’ve seen some similar crimes in Madison.”
