Smoke on the second floor of Witte Residence Hall early Friday morning prompted firefighters to call for a full structure response.
According to a Madison Fire Department incident report, an alarm activated around 2 a.m. sent firefighters to investigate the scene. Students were evacuating as the firefighters arrived.
The firefighters did not see smoke or fire on the second floor of the residence hall, but they did find scorch marks on a bulletin board in the hallway near the elevators.
They stopped the full structure fire response, allowing maintenance to reset the alarm and students to return inside.
The University of Wisconsin Police Department investigated the fire and cited the student, who was intoxicated at the time.
