University of Wisconsin Student Services Finance Committee unanimously voted in favor of Child Care Tuition Assistance Program’s $1,075,600 budget Thursday.
Rep. Kyle Watter said despite the large budget, CCTAP’s proposal was straightforward. Rep. Miona Short agreed with him and said there was nothing the committee found necessary to adjust.
Another SSFC representative, Colin Barushok, said CCTAP’s approved budget will offer a service very useful to student parents at UW.
“There are students on this campus who benefit tremendously from a service like this and I am extremely proud to support it,” Barushok said.
CCTAP’s budget proposal for $1,075,600 passed with a vote of 8 to 0.

WSUM budget hearing
Following CCTAP, WSUM had a budget hearing with a proposed budget of $365,796 for the 2016-17 year. WSUM sought a three percent increase in its budget for the upcoming year due to a consistent need for maintenance of technology, Dave Black, WSUM general manager, said. This increase does not include the mandatory increase in student wages.
Students who work at WSUM spoke on behalf of the professional and personal development they have gained through their participation at the radio station. Production director Evan Boyd said that WSUM has not only been a great learning experience but also has significantly improved his communication skills.
Black said the quality of WSUM is a reflection of how well the administration and student government managed the station. Many of the opportunities at WSUM became possible due to the support of SSFC, Black said.
“You trust the students, you train them to the best of your ability,” Black said. “You don’t step in and say no because then you win the battle but lose the war. You let them develop their best instincts and try things and fail and learn.”
Addition to the ASM election ballot
Members from the United Council for UW students requested that a yes or no question be added to the ASM election ballot in open forum. The question is, “Do you support the use of ASM resources to grow the grassroots statewide student movement?”
SSFC was concerned with the vagueness of the question. Rep. Erin Harper said although she recognizes it is a question of value, she is concerned about the wording because it does not include a dollar amount, but is asking about resources.
SSFC did not accept the proposal during the meeting but the council requested it be put on the list for open forum at the next meeting.
SSFC will meet again Feb. 8..
