An Associated Students of Madison committee approved the Campus Women’s Center’s requested budget of $82,663 at their meeting Thursday.

When the Student Services Finance Committee met on Monday, CWC proposed a budget of $85,103.70. The approved budget cut $2440.70 from that amount, a reduction was a result mainly of cutting employee hours.

“There has been a problem with Campus Women’s Center with filling the salary positions,” Rep. Ian Malmstadt said. “We are looking at the numbers and they haven’t come close to filling the line.”

The committee approved a motion to change the salaries for positions within Campus Women’s Center from $9.19 to $9.44 an hour.

SSFC also approved a motion to decrease the summer hours for the Campus Women’s Center from 10 hours a week to seven hours a week was also approved, as well a motion to cut the publicity coordinator position from 20 hours to 16 hours.

“There should be a cut to the supplies line item,”  Secretary Brett Ducharme. “I don’t believe handing out items as being a service or great benefit to students since students can get the supplies themselves.”

Also at Thursday’s meeting, Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztalan presented their budget proposal. MEChA was approved at their eligibility hearing earlier this semester.

MEChA, which promotes culture, higher education and self-determination by giving students the tools to express themselves for its people, has an annual conference and meets three times throughout the academic year.

The total amount requested for 2014-2015 is around $102,000, according to SSFC Chair Devon Maier.

That amount is over the $100,000 total cap for an organization, so MEChA will submit additional budget documents to SSFC by Tuesday in order to bring its budget down below the cap.

The group requested decreases for computer software and increases for the fall MEChA conference, the national and regional conference, equipment supplies and furniture.

Alberto Cuevas from MEChA discussed their specific increase and decreases for their conferences. They are requesting an increase for the Regional Leadership Conference; instead of $600, they would like $1,632. They are also requesting an increase for the National MEChA Conference; instead of $2,733, they would like $9,450.

They would like to add $7,500, to their current “art supplies” budget of $920, for a total of $8,420.

The committee will make a final decision for their budget Monday.
