The Associated Students of Madison approved a University of Wisconsin student Tuesday to represent Madison’s student population on the Alcohol License Review Committee.

ASM Chair Tyler Junger approved UW sophomore Austin Buerosse to fill the position.

Junger formally appointed Buerosse to the position of non-voting student technical adviser after 16 applicants applied for the position, Legislative Affairs Chair Adam Johnson said.

Buerosse will be the second UW student to serve on ALRC pending approval by Mayor Dave Cieslewicz. He will join Mark Woulf, who until only recently served in Buerosse’s prospective position. Woulf now serves as a voting representative on the committee.

Buerosse was approved shortly after his interview Tuesday. A statement by the ASM press office said following the interview, Junger thought Buerosse was “reliable, level-headed and able to serve intelligently.” Buerosse received the unanimous support of Legislative Affairs.

“I’ve been one of the big supporters in getting a student representative on the committee,” said Ald. Shiva Bidar-Sielaff, District 5, member of the ALRC. “I’m specifically really interested in someone with interest in providing our community with entertainment for those who can’t be in the bars.”

Bidar-Sielaff, who is new to the committee herself, said the student representative should have an intimate knowledge not only of the committee’s affairs and policies, but also of how those policies come to affect not only students, but also the wider community as a whole.

The student representative should be able to balance his or her position as a committee member and a student, acknowledging both of the unique perspectives, she added.

The search and screening process for applicants was carried out by the Legislative Affairs Committee. Johnson said through the screening and interview process, Buerosse seemed to be the best versed in the affairs of the ALRC.

“[Buerosse], through his application, was not a favorite for the position,” Johnson said. “But based on his knowledge and the interview, we’re confident he will do a great job representing UW.”

Buerosse cited his experience as a reporter for The Badger Herald in 2008 covering city events, including ALRC meetings, as the reason he decided to submit an application for the position.

In an e-mail to ASM expressing his interest in the position, Buerosse summed up his intent and purpose in applying to represent UW students.

“Even in a non-voting role, I will fight tooth-and-nail to ensure that the voice of UW-Madison students rings clear above the din of the established interests,” Buerosse said.

Junger said he trusted Legislative Affairs’ decision to select him entirely, but wanted to ensure that Buerosse understood his responsibilities and that he would be able to accurately represent the opinions found on campus among students of all ages.

“I look to bring some perspective to the variety of interests and views among UW students,” Buerosse said. “I’m really excited about this; I really just look forward to serving.”
